AutoCAD Designer
Job Description:
Venture Dynamics is seeking an experienced AutoCAD Designer to support ship repair and industrial engineering projects in Newport News, Virginia. The AutoCAD Designer develops technical drawings and layouts used in shipyard repair, fabrication, and modification work supporting Navy and commercial vessel maintenance operations. This role supports engineering and production teams by translating project requirements into accurate drafting packages used for planning, fabrication, and installation activities. Assignments are project-based and may continue based on performance and operational needs.
Responsibilities
- Develop detailed 2D AutoCAD drawings and layouts to support ship repair, fabrication, and engineering projects
- Interpret engineering sketches, specifications, and technical requirements to produce accurate technical drawings
- Revise and update existing drawings to support vessel modifications, equipment installations, and structural changes
- Coordinate with engineers, planners, and project managers to clarify design requirements and technical details
- Maintain organized drawing files, revision documentation, and project drafting records
- Verify drawing accuracy and ensure compliance with project specifications and industry drafting standards
- Assist with preparation of drawing packages used for fabrication, installation, and project planning activities
Requirements
- Minimum 2–5 years AutoCAD drafting experience in industrial, marine, manufacturing, or shipyard environments
- Proficiency using AutoCAD for development of technical and fabrication drawings
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, sketches, and technical documentation
- Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate drafting work under project deadlines
- Working knowledge of drafting standards, dimensioning practices, and document control procedures
- Ability to collaborate with engineering, planning, and production teams in a technical work environment
- Ability to obtain and maintain required base access credentials when supporting shipyard facilities
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting Navy ship repair, shipbuilding, or marine engineering projects
- Experience producing structural, mechanical, piping, or equipment layout drawings
- Associate degree in drafting, engineering technology, or related technical field
- Experience working in shipyard or heavy industrial engineering environments
Additional Information
Work is performed in office and shipyard environments supporting Navy and commercial repair operations. The role may require occasional access to vessels, industrial work areas, and fabrication facilities when supporting engineering or production teams. PPE is required when entering shipyard or shipboard spaces in accordance with site safety policies. Reliable transportation is required to report to assigned project locations. Work schedules may include overtime or extended hours depending on project and production requirements.
