Job Description:
Material Buyer (Shipyard / Marine Procurement)
Venture Dynamics is seeking an experienced Material Buyer to support shipbuilding, ship repair, and industrial marine operations in a fast-paced production environment. This role is responsible for sourcing and procuring materials, equipment, and supplies required to support production schedules and operational deadlines. The Material Buyer works closely with Production, Planning, Engineering, and Quality teams to ensure the timely and accurate flow of materials into the shipyard. This position supports project-based operations and assignments may continue based on performance and contract demand.
Responsibilities
- Source and procure materials, components, equipment, and consumables required for shipyard and marine operations
- Review material requisitions, verify specifications, and obtain competitive supplier quotations
- Evaluate suppliers based on pricing, quality, delivery performance, lead times, and compliance requirements
- Negotiate pricing, delivery schedules, payment terms, and contractual conditions with vendors
- Process, issue, and track purchase orders from procurement through final delivery
- Coordinate shipping, logistics, and delivery schedules to support production deadlines and operational requirements
- Monitor inventory levels and material availability for current and upcoming shipyard projects
- Resolve discrepancies involving pricing, quantities, quality concerns, damaged shipments, or delivery delays
Requirements
- Prior experience as a Buyer, Purchasing Agent, or Procurement Specialist in a shipyard, marine, heavy industrial, manufacturing, or defense environment
- Strong negotiation skills with experience obtaining competitive pricing and supplier agreements
- Ability to read and interpret technical specifications, drawings, bills of materials, and material requirements
- Experience using ERP or procurement management systems such as Oracle or similar platforms
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and standard procurement software tools
- Strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple purchase orders and production-driven deadlines
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills for coordination with suppliers and internal departments
- Ability to maintain accurate procurement documentation, purchasing records, and ERP data
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience procuring maritime materials including steel, valves, piping, electrical components, coatings, and OEM shipboard systems
- Knowledge of ABS, NAVSEA, USCG, ISO, or related marine regulatory standards
- Background in strategic sourcing, supplier development, or supplier performance management
- Experience supporting Navy or military vessel repair and modernization projects
- OSHA 10 Maritime or similar industrial safety training
Additional Information
Work is performed in active shipyard and shipboard environments supporting Navy and commercial repair operations. The role may require accessing vessels, industrial areas, and production work zones. PPE is required when entering shipyard or shipboard spaces in accordance with site safety policies. Work schedules may include overtime, nights, weekends, and variable shifts based on project or production requirements.
