Burn Table Operator (Ship Repair)
Job Description:
Venture Dynamics is seeking an experienced Burn Table Operator to support ship repair and fabrication operations in Norfolk, Virginia. This role involves operating CNC and manual burn tables to cut steel plates and structural materials used in Navy and commercial vessel repair. The Burn Table Operator plays a critical role in ensuring precision cutting and material preparation in a fast-paced shipyard environment. This position may also be referred to as a CNC Cutting Operator or Plasma/Oxy-Fuel Cutter. Assignments are project-based and may continue based on performance and contract demand.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate CNC or manual burn tables to cut steel plates and structural components for ship repair projects
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and templates to determine accurate cutting specifications
- Measure, align, and secure materials to ensure precision and proper fit during cutting operations
- Monitor cutting processes to maintain quality, accuracy, and dimensional tolerances
- Perform routine equipment checks and basic maintenance to ensure safe and efficient operation
- Handle and move materials safely in coordination with fabrication and shipyard teams
- Maintain a clean and organized work area in compliance with shipyard standards
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of experience operating burn tables, plasma cutters, or oxy-fuel cutting equipment in a shipyard or industrial environment
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, and technical specifications
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain tight tolerances
- Basic computer skills for CNC setup, programming, or file handling
- Knowledge of shipyard safety practices and material handling procedures
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, physically demanding industrial environment
- Must be able to obtain and maintain access to military and commercial shipyard facilities
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting Navy or NAVSEA ship repair projects
- OSHA 10 Maritime certification
- Experience with multiple cutting systems (plasma and oxy-fuel)
- Forklift or material handling equipment experience
Additional Information
Work is performed aboard vessels, in dry docks, and in industrial shipyard environments supporting Navy and commercial repair operations. Duties may involve confined or elevated spaces and active production areas. Exposure to industrial noise and environmental conditions is expected. PPE is required in accordance with site safety policies, and respiratory protection may be required based on task or location. Work schedules may include overtime, nights, weekends, and variable shifts based on production needs.
